A Fulbright scholar from Cali, Colombia, Leila Cobo is the executive Editor for Latin Content and Programming for Billboard as well as a classical pianist and successful novelist and biographer.

 

Ms. Cobo is considered one of the world’s leading experts in Latin music and under her tenure, Billboard has expanded its coverage of Latin Music to unprecedented levels both on its print and digital platforms, including the launch of Spanish-language website Billboardenespanol.com. Today, Billboard is the only mainstream media platform in the world that covers Latin music on a daily basis. In November, Leila was selected as one of five honorees by the Latin Grammys’ inaugural Leading Latin Ladies ceremony.

 

Leila also works closely with broadcast partner Telemundo on the Billboard Latin Music Awards and programs the yearly Billboard Latin Music Conference, the largest gathering of the Latin music industry in the U.S. The conference is known for Cobo’s signature Q&A sessions with the top Latin artists in the world, including Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan, Romeo Santos, Marc Anthony, Jenni Rivera and more.

 

A classical pianist and novelist, Ms. Cobo has a degree in piano performance (from Manahttan School of Music and concertized extensively before getting a Fulbright scholarship to attend the Annenberg School at the University of Southern California, where she obtained a master’s in communication management. She also has a journalism degree from Universidad Javeriana in Bogota.

 

She has published two award-winning novels with Grand Central Publishing/Hatchette (“Tell Me Something True,” for which she won the National Latino Book Award, and “The Second Time We Met”) and her biography on Jenni Rivera, published in March,, 2013, was the top-selling Spanish-language book in the country for nearly two months.   She also published “Apunta a las estrellas,” a guide for aspiring Latin artists, iand co-wrote “Una Vida,” the memoir of Puerto Rican diva Ednita Nazario, published in 2017 on Penguin.

 

Prior to Billboard, Leila wrote for the Los Angeles Times and was later the pop music critic at the Miami Herald and continues to contribute to various publications. She’s written liner notes for Ricky Martin, Shakira, Julio Iglesias and Selena among others. Among other accolades, she’s been named a South Florida Woman of Distinction, one of Latina’s Top 25 women in media and received a Premio Mujer Imagen in Miami.
