NOMINATIONS FOR THE MIDEM CLASSICAL AWARDS 2008

07/12/2007
For its fourth edition, the MIDEM Classical Awards will take place before a public audience on Wednesday 30 January 2008 at 7pm in the Debussy Theatre of the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, as part of the 42nd edition of MIDEM.

Record industry and music publishing professionals have submitted 562 recordings for this edition, representing 111 labels from 23 countries.

For this occasion, a prestigious international jury made up of the leading specialist magazines, radios and organisations, has come together to recognise the top artists and recordings of the year: Radio Classique and Le Monde de la Musique (France), Gramophone (United Kingdom, United States), Fono Forum, Radio MDR-Figaro/ARD and Klassik.com (Germany), Crescendo (Belgium), Pizzicato (Luxemburg), Musik & Theater (Switzerland), ORF (Austria), Musica (Italy), Scherzo (Spain), Gramofon (Hungary), Classic Radio (Finland), Gramophone China (China), the International Artist Managers’ Association (IAMA) and the International Music + Media Centre (IMZ) (Austria).

The awards ceremony will pay a special tribute to the celebrated German mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig, guest of honour at MIDEM Classique & Jazz 2008, who will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. The American conductor David Zinman, whose career constitutes an outstanding oeuvre notable for the complete symphonies of Beethoven, will be presented with the Artist of the Year Award. The Swedish independent label BIS, founded by Robert Von Bahr and renowned for its catalogue of Scandinavian and contemporary music, will receive the Label of the Year Award.

The ceremony will include a performance by the Regional Cannes Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur Orchestra conducted by Philippe Bender, and will be hosted by Genie Godula and James Jolly. Several leading figures on the international musical scene will be present for the fourth edition of the MIDEM Classical Awards.

The strong presence of professionals from the classical sector during MIDEM, combined with the wish of jury members to encourage the distribution and promotion of the award winners, make the MIDEM Classical Awards an exceptional launch pad for all the winning artists.
